The Kussharo caldera has a low annual average temperature of 5.2℃ throughout the year. The temperature differences between morning and evening is large in summer. It is severe cold in winter. Please be prepared what to wear when you come.

Spring

April to May

The snow is slowly melting and plants are starting to sprout. There are days when the sun is strong and warm, but there are still days when it snows. It is necessary to prepare for the severe cold weather on the day the temperature is low. Cherry blossoms usually bloom in mid-May every year.

Summer

June to Mid-August

Summer is a season when there is a large temperature difference between daytime, morning and evening. Also, the weather changes rapidly. The sunlight is extremely strong, and there are days when the temperature exceeds 30℃. You will also need long-sleeved shirts to protect yourself from the sun and insect repellents such as flies and gnats. Depending on atmospheric conditions, cold winds may blow from the north, and the temperature may drop below 20℃ for several days. You need clothes to keep you warm even though it’s summer.

Autumn

End of August to November

After mid-August, the climate changes gradually by easing heat and the cold air coming. By the end of September, the maximum temperature will be below 20℃ and the minimum temperature will be below 10℃. The peak of autumn leaves is usually in mid-October. At that time the daytime are getting shorter and the sun sets earlier. Also, there are days when you will need cold weather gear after October.

Winter

December to March

Snow usually accumulates at the end of December. It is the coldest season of the year from around the winter solstice to February. There are many sunny days in winter, and there are days when the minimum temperature drops to around -30℃ due to radiation cooling. The maximum temperature is below 0℃. However, it feels warmer than the temperature if it’s sunny because the sun light is extremely strong. Also, you need to be careful as there are several days of intense blizzards each season.
