Snowshoeing
Mt. Mokoto
Mt. Mokoto is the highest peak of the mountains surrounding Lake Kussharo. From near the top, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Kussharo and the surrounding mountains.
This is 2.5 hour mountain hiking, and the activity level is “Moderate (Level 2)”. We start at a nearby campground and walk through the forest. In the quiet forest, you can get a feel for how the birds and animals live. Once you pass through the forest, the wide sky and the vast Kussharo Caldera will spread out before your eyes. If the weather is good, you can see Mt. Shari and the mountains of Shiretoko.
Please enjoy the overwhelming scale of Kussharo Caldera and delicate and unique natural phenomena created by the severe cold weather.
The Lake Mashu Outer Rim of the Caldera
The Mashu Caldera was created by a eruption about 7,000 years ago. You can enjoy a mystical view overlooking the Lake Mashu, known as the Lake of the Gods.
This is 2 hour mountain snowshoeing, and the activity level is “Light (Level 1)”. We start from the Lake Mashu First Observation Deck. We will walk along the ridge of the outer rim of the Mashu Caldera. You can see Mt. Mashu and Mt. Shari in the distance If the weather permits. On the way back, we will walk while seeing the varied terrain from the Kussharo Caldera to the town of Teshikaga.
You will enjoy it even more as you walk while imagining the history of the Lake Kussharo and the Lake Mashu, and the volcanic activity at the time.
